and hemp

Cannabis or marijuana is not the same plant than cannabis sativa L., although both share history and genetics. Even though they are very similar, there are also important differences to be taken into consideration.

Hemp and cannabis sativa L are ancient plants. Evidences of their existence have been found since 12000 B.C, according to scientific estimations. It has been cultivated since the human being started agriculture and has been used in every age, culture, nation and civilization; until now.

The conquest of cannabis, at a global level, starts in the Asian continent. It is still not clear the exact place where the plant appeared. It could have been China, India or any other country in South-East Asia. The transition to other demographic places in the world is attributed to the human being. Merchants, travellers, slaves, etc, involved in the trade routes between Europe- Asia and the rest of the world, imported and exported cannabis and hemp seeds, already differentiated between psychoactive and fibrous.

Hemp was used for thousands of years to produce papyri, fabrics or ropes; among many other derivatives and uses.

The human being has enjoyed in the course of history of the company of the cannabis, taking advantage of its different uses, medicinal and recreational. It is important to stress the religious application of the cannabis plant, which is significantly present in countries like Jamaica, India, Nepal, etc.

The medicinal use of the plant is a resource that has not been completely developed nowadays. Recent researches indicate that this plant, which has been undervalued for long, is recovering an important position as medicinal plant, taking full advantage of its therapeutic properties.

The origin of CBD

The medical and the recreational applications of cannabis arise from the same part of the plant, the phytocannabinoids. What are phytocannabinoids? They are small molecules placed in the plant's resin, glands and trichomes during all its life but especially in the flowering period. Until now, 80 different cannabinoids have been discovered, the most well-known ones are THC and CBD. These cannabinoids are the most widely present and abundant in the plant in comparison to others, representing 40% of the total.

The psychotropic effects of THC are well-known. But what happens with CBD? CBD, together with THC, is the cannabinoid that is being mostly investigated at present. At the end of the second decade of the 20th century, 1920-1930, CBD was isolated. But it was well into the sixties, when Rafael Mechoulam and his team of Israeli investigators fully rewrote the molecular structure of CBD, completely describing its molecular mapping. From that decade onwards, lots of discoveries have been made thanks to scientific investigations carried on all over the world, which have provided very positive information about the medicinal use of CBD.

and its applications

CBD is not a psychoactive cannabinoid, therefore it can be used all the day long without any chance of feeling “high”. This cannabinoid causes a sensation of muscle relaxation and peace of mind, but has no psychotropic effect on the user. Therefore, daily tasks are never hindered by consume, if no abuse occurs. Nowadays medicinal uses are many and help, to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the disease or pathology to be treated. Several clinical tests and trials prove that CBD can be an antiemetic agent, significantly reducing nausea and vomit. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect, helpful for chronic or occasional pain and anxiety, and acts as an anxiolytic, antidepressive and antispasmodic agent, which helps against cancer and many other sufferings.

CBD use is efficient for people in a fast and effective way. The interaction between the exogenous and the endocannabinoids, present in the human body, is the reason why this cannabinoid has so good results with so many different pathologies and diseases.

Receptors in the endocannabinoid system, CB1 and CB2, create a synergy with the cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. This synergy keeps the human endocannabinoid system vital and strong, but not dependant. That means that the human endocannabinoid system isn't weakened by reducing or eliminating exogenous cannabinoids.

This CBD cannabinoid has a great future potential, but always better if combined with other fitocannabinoids. This is the reason why many countries like USA, Mexico, Canada, Spain or Italy (historically reluctant to cannabis use, both medicinal and recreational), are now open to its medicinal application. They are particularly open to CBD, non-psychoactive element belonging to cannabis and hemp.

Studies and trials have been carried on for years, even by privately held companies. And due to the irrefutable results, treating diseases like epilepsy, more and more scientists and doctors are interested in its use, study and characteristics; what will lead to future discoveries.
